Trusting the Hidden Grace: The Dark Night with St. John of the Cross

Holy Wednesday has an ache to it. Tradition often associates this day with betrayal, secrecy, and the gathering shadow before the final events of Jesus’ Passion. It is a day that feels heavy, and for that very reason, St. John of the Cross is a fitting companion.

St. John is best known for writing about the “dark night,” that mysterious season when God can seem absent, distant, or hidden. But John never described the dark night as punishment. Instead, he saw it as a painful and holy purification, a stripping away of illusions so that we can be united more deeply with divine love.

Holy Wednesday speaks into that experience. This is the point in the week when things begin to feel uncertain and tense. The story is moving toward suffering, and there is no easy way around it. We may recognize something of our own lives here too. There are seasons when clarity disappears, when prayers feel dry, when we cannot sense what God is doing.

St. John of the Cross tells us not to be afraid of that darkness. God is still at work there. In fact, some of the deepest transformation happens precisely when we are no longer relying on comfort, certainty, or emotional reassurance.

That does not make the darkness easy. Betrayal still hurts. Waiting still stretches us. Hiddenness still unsettles us. But John reminds us that God is not less present because we cannot feel him clearly. Sometimes God is most deeply present in ways beyond our understanding.

Holy Wednesday invites us to trust the hidden work of grace. We do not have to force insight or manufacture peace. We are simply asked to stay close, to remain willing, and to believe that love is still moving beneath the surface.

This is a day for quiet trust. Not polished faith, but surrendered faith. Not answers, but openness.

Reflective questions:

  • Where in my life do I feel like I am walking through a kind of dark night?

  • What am I learning to let go of in this season?

  • Can I trust that God is present even when I do not feel that presence clearly?
