Transformation – The Living Flame

Have you ever watched a damp log on a fire? It hisses, it pops, and it lets out thick, black smoke. It doesn't look very "fire-like." But as the heat stays on it, the moisture evaporates, the bark burns away, and eventually, the log becomes the fire. It glows with the same heat and light as the flames around it.

For St. John of the Cross, the goal of the spiritual life is not moral perfection alone—it is transformation in love. This transformation is gradual and often painful. At first, the fire crackles and smokes as it dries out the dampness of the wood. Our impurities surface, and our old habits resist the heat. But if the soul remains in the fire—through prayer, surrender, and charity—the process continues until the smoke clears. Eventually, love becomes the soul’s natural movement. Obedience flows from affection rather than duty. Sacrifice becomes a source of joy. Fear diminishes as the "perfect love" of God casts it out. John’s mysticism is not escapism; the more united a person is to God, the more capable they are of authentic, selfless love in their daily interactions with others

If we stay in the fire of prayer and service, we eventually start to "glow." We start to react to people with God’s patience instead of our own. We start to love with His heart. We don't stop being ourselves; we just become the best, "on fire" version of ourselves.

Questions for the Day

  • When my "impurities" (like a short temper) surface, do I run away from God or stay in the fire?

  • Where do I see "smoke" in my life right now?

  • How can I "stay in the fire" of God's love today, even when it's uncomfortable?
