“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
— Proverbs 18:21
Words may seem small, but they carry tremendous power. A single encouraging sentence can lift someone who is burdened. A sharp remark can remain in the heart long after the moment has passed. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that what we say is never empty. Our words plant seeds, and eventually, those seeds bear fruit.
In daily life, it is easy to speak without thinking. We respond quickly, react emotionally, and sometimes underestimate the effect of ordinary conversation. Yet Scripture teaches us that speech shapes the atmosphere around us. It influences relationships, reveals the condition of the heart, and reflects whether wisdom or foolishness is guiding us.
Jesus showed us what life-giving speech looks like. He spoke truth with compassion, correction with love, and mercy with authority. He did not use words carelessly. His speech reflected the heart of the Father. As followers of Christ, we are called to speak in a way that reflects Him.
Today, consider the fruit of your words. Are they building others up? Are they bringing peace, hope, and clarity? Or have they become careless, impatient, or critical? God desires to make our speech a source of life.
What kind of fruit has my speech been producing lately?
Have my words recently strengthened or discouraged others?
How can I become more intentional with my speech today?
Lord, thank You for the gift of words. Forgive me for the times I have spoken carelessly or harshly. Teach me to speak with wisdom, kindness, and grace. Let my words bring life and reflect Your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
