The Invitation to Go Deeper

Evelyn Underhill often spoke about the spiritual life as a journey inward—not in a self-centered way, but in a way that leads us closer to God. Lent is the perfect time to take that journey seriously.

We tend to live on the surface of things. Quick reactions, busy schedules, constant input. But Underhill believed that beneath all that surface activity is a deeper reality—one where God is already present and inviting us closer.

Lent becomes an invitation to go deeper.

This doesn’t mean doing something dramatic. It might look like paying closer attention to your thoughts, your reactions, your habits. Not judging them harshly but noticing them honestly.

Underhill encouraged a kind of gentle self-awareness. When you notice impatience, don’t panic. When you see distraction, don’t feel like you’ve failed. Just observe. Bring it into the light. That’s where transformation begins.

The deeper life isn’t about perfection—it’s about sincerity.

And here’s the surprising part: going deeper often reveals both our limitations and God’s grace at the same time. You might notice your struggles more clearly, but you’ll also begin to notice God’s presence in the middle of them.

Lent gives us permission to slow down enough to see all of that.

Instead of staying on the surface this season, what if you allowed yourself to go a little deeper? Not all at once. Just one honest step at a time.

Reflective Questions:

  • Where do I tend to stay on the “surface” in my life?

  • What might I discover if I slowed down and paid closer attention?

  • How do I usually respond when I notice my own flaws or struggles?

  • What would it look like to approach myself with honesty and grace?
