The Grace of Humility

"God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."

James 4:6

Brother Lawrence approached God with radical humility. He never forgot that he was "a great awkward fellow who broke everything." Yet this humility was not self-deprecation — it was freedom.

"When we are honest about our weaknesses, we stop trying to impress God with our spiritual performance. We come to Him as we are — broken, inconsistent, prone to wander — and discover that He receives us with open arms. We must make our heart a spiritual temple, wherein to adore Him incessantly."

— Brother Lawrence

Humility and Honesty

Brother Lawrence encouraged speaking to God "plainly and honestly" about everything — our struggles, failures, joys, and questions. No pretense. No religious language to impress. Just honest conversation with a loving Father.

This honesty extends to ourselves. We acknowledge when we've failed to practice His presence. We confess our wandering minds without self-condemnation. And we receive God's grace to begin again — and again, and again.

The Freedom of Weakness

Paradoxically, acknowledging our weakness opens us to God's strength. When we stop trying to manufacture spiritual experiences through our own effort, we create space for God to work. Our very limitations become invitations for His grace.

Today's Practice

Bring one of your weaknesses to God today — not asking Him to remove it, but offering it as an opportunity for His grace. Say honestly: "Lord, You know I struggle with ___. I offer this weakness to You. Meet me in it. Let it become a place of deeper dependence on You."

Reflection Questions

1. What weaknesses do you try to hide from God? What would change if you brought them into the light?

2. How has spiritual pride hindered your relationship with God?

3. What would it look like to approach God with the simplicity of a child?
