The Ascent – The Path of \"Nada\"

If you’ve ever gone hiking, you know that every extra pound in your backpack feels like ten pounds by the time you’re halfway up the trail. You eventually start tossing out the heavy stuff you don't need.

St. John describes the spiritual life as a mountain climb. He uses the word Nada (Spanish for "nothing") to describe the path. He isn't saying your life should be empty or miserable. He’s saying: Travel light.

The "Nada" way is about realizing that nothing on this earth—no amount of money, success, or even "spiritual experiences"—is actually God. If we try to "carry" those things as if they are our ultimate goal, we’ll get exhausted and stuck. The goal is the summit (union with God), and the best way to get there is to keep your hands open and your heart unburdened.

Questions for the Day

  • Am I carrying "extra baggage" (grudges, ego, perfectionism) that makes my spiritual life feel like a chore?

  • Do I try to "buy" my way into happiness with things that don't last?

  • What would "traveling light" look like in my schedule this week?
