Prayer as a Way of Being

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances."

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

For Brother Lawrence, prayer was not merely an activity but a state of being. It was the constant atmosphere of his soul — an ongoing conversation with God that underlaid everything else.

This doesn't mean he was constantly speaking words to God. Much of his prayer was wordless — a simple, loving attention to God's presence. Sometimes a glance toward heaven. Sometimes a whispered "I love You." Sometimes just a quiet awareness: You are here.

Large Call to Action Headline

Brother Lawrence recommended "short, frequent prayers" throughout the day rather than occasional lengthy sessions. These might include:

"Lord, I need You."

• "Thank You, Father."

• "I love You."

• "Help me."

• "You are here."

• "Not my will, but Yours."

These brief prayers take only seconds but keep the heart turned toward God. Over time, they create a rhythm of prayer that pervades the entire day.

"Think often on God, by day, by night, in your business and even in your diversions. He is always near you and with you; leave him not alone." Brother Lawrence.

Practice: Breath Prayer

Choose a simple phrase to pray throughout today. It might be: "Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me." Or simply: "Jesus." Or: "Abba, Father." Pray it with each breath — inhaling one part, exhaling the other. Let this prayer become the rhythm of your day.

Reflection Questions

1. How do you currently understand "prayer without ceasing"? How does Brother Lawrence's approach expand this?

2. What prevents you from praying more frequently throughout the day?

3. What brief prayer might become your "default" thought, replacing anxiety or distraction?
