"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." - John 14:27
Brother Lawrence's kitchen was not a peaceful place. Pots clattered. Fires roared. Monks called out orders from every direction. Yet in the midst of this chaos, he possessed a tranquility that amazed everyone who met him.
"The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer; and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament." Brother Lawrence.
This peace was not the absence of chaos but the presence of God within it. Brother Lawrence had learned to carry an inner sanctuary wherever he went — a quiet place of communion that external circumstances could not disturb.
This peace doesn't come from controlling our circumstances. It comes from trusting the One who holds all circumstances in His hands. When we are rooted in God's presence, we can face disruption without being disrupted, encounter stress without being stressed, meet chaos without becoming chaotic.
Today, when you encounter a stressful situation — a difficult conversation, a frustrating delay, an overwhelming demand — pause internally. Take a breath. Remember: "God is here, with me, right now." Let this awareness be your refuge. You don't need to escape the situation; you need to meet God within it.
1. What typically robs you of peace? How might God's presence change your response?
2. Can you recall a time when you experienced peace amid difficulty? What made it possible?
3. What would it mean to carry an "inner sanctuary" with you throughout the day?
