Love as Your Motivation

For Brother Lawrence, the practice of God's presence was not a discipline to be endured but a love to be enjoyed. Love was both his motivation and his method.

"We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed." Brother Lawrence.

This changes everything. We are not trying to earn God's favor through spiritual discipline. We are not proving our worth through religious effort. We are simply responding to a love that pursued us first — the love of a God who gave everything to draw us to Himself.

When love is the motivation, the practice becomes a joy. We don't have to remember God's presence; we want to. Like lovers who think of each other throughout the day, we naturally turn our thoughts to the One we love.

Reflection on God's Love

Before practicing anything, meditate on God's love for you. Consider:

• He created you with intention and delight

• He has sustained every breath you've ever taken

• He sent His Son to reconcile you to Himself

• He pursues you with relentless, patient love

• He delights in your presence as much as you long for His

Let this love sink deep into your heart. Then, from this place of being loved, practice His presence today.

Love in Action

Choose one task today and perform it entirely for the love of God. Not for productivity. Not for recognition. Not even for the good outcome. Simply as an act of love for the One who loves you. Notice how this changes your experience of the task.

Reflection Questions

1. What typically motivates your spiritual practices — duty, fear, guilt, or love? Be honest.

2. How has God's love been tangible in your life this week?

3. What would it look like to approach tomorrow's responsibilities entirely from love?
